La Russa attended the University of South Florida and Florida State University, where he played as a shortstop and a pitcher. However, La Russa's playing career in Major League Baseball was not very successful, so he decided to retire at the age of 30 and become a coach. He began his coaching career in the minor leagues and worked his way up to the Major Leagues. La Russa is best known for his 33-year managerial career, during which he successively managed the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals. He led his teams to a total of three World Series titles (1989, 2006, and 2011) and six league championships.

La Russa is considered one of the greatest managers in baseball history due to his innovative approach to the game, his emphasis on analytics, and his ability to get the most out of his players. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. La Russa is also known for his advocacy for animal welfare, and he founded the Animal Rescue Foundation in Walnut Creek, California, which helps neglected and abandoned animals find homes.
