After completing his legal education, LaRussa began his professional baseball career as a player for the Kansas City Athletics in 1963. He played as an infielder for several teams over the next few years, including the Oakland Athletics and the Atlanta Braves. However, it was his career as a manager that would define his legacy in the sport.

In 1979, LaRussa began managing the Chicago White Sox and led them to their first playoff appearance in 24 years. He later went on to manage the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals, leading both teams to multiple World Series championships. He retired from baseball in 2011 with a record of 2,728 wins and 2,365 losses as a manager, making him the third-winningest manager in Major League Baseball history at the time. LaRussa was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014, cementing his status as one of the most successful and influential figures in the sport.
