McGraw was known for his left-handed pitching and his signature pitch, the screwball. He played a crucial role in helping the Mets win the World Series in 1969, and recorded the final out of the Series with a strikeout against Baltimore's Davey Johnson. After being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, McGraw became a fan favorite and helped lead the team to their first World Series win in 1980. During his 19-year career, McGraw recorded 180 saves and retired with a record of 96-92 with a 3.14 ERA.

In addition to his successful baseball career, McGraw was also known for his humorous personality and his famous catchphrase "Ya Gotta Believe!" which he coined during the Mets' 1973 playoff run. After retiring from baseball, McGraw remained in the public eye as a commentator and motivational speaker. In 2003, he was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed away in 2004 at the age of 59. Tug McGraw's legacy continues to live on through his accomplishments on the field and his charismatic personality off the field. Read even more about Tug McGraw at Wikipedia
