Tug McGraw was a professional baseball pitcher who played for the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Kansas City Royals. Born Franklin Edwin McGraw Jr. in Martinez, California in 1944, his nickname "Tug" came from his mother who called him "Tugger" as a child. He played baseball throughout his high school and college years before being drafted to the New York Mets in 1965. More about Tug McGraw

In addition to his successful baseball career, McGraw was also known for his humorous personality and his famous catchphrase "Ya Gotta Believe!" which he coined during the Mets' 1973 playoff run. After retiring from baseball, McGraw remained in the public eye as a commentator and motivational speaker. In 2003, he was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed away in 2004 at the age of 59.
