Ugueth Urbina Autographs
Ugueth Urbina was born on February 15, 1974, in Caracas, Venezuela. He began playing baseball at a young age and eventually became one of the most successful Venezuelan pitchers in Major League Baseball history. Urbina's professional career started in 1995 when he was signed by the Montreal Expos. He spent five years with the Expos before being traded to the Boston Red Sox in 2001 for Tomo Ohka and Rich Rundles. Urbina had some of his strongest seasons with the Red Sox, helping them reach the playoffs in 2003.
Urbina's career highlight came in 2003 when he became the closer for the Red Sox. In that season, he had 40 saves and a career-low 1.98 ERA while earning a spot on the American League All-Star team. Urbina's postseason performance was also impressive as he recorded saves in both the American League Division Series and American League Championship Series. However, Urbina's time in Boston would not last as he was traded to the Texas Rangers mid-way through the 2003 season. Urbina would pitch for many other teams before retiring from baseball in 2007.
While Urbina had a successful baseball career, his life after baseball has been tumultuous. In 2005, he was arrested in Venezuela for firing a gun at workers on his family's farm. Urbina denied the charges, but was eventually found guilty and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Despite pleading innocence, he was transferred to a maximum security prison in Venezuela where he served seven years before being released in 2015. Today, Urbina lives in the Dominican Republic and occasionally participates in baseball-related activities.
