Martinez made his debut in the MLB in 2002 with the Cleveland Indians and spent seven seasons with the team. During his time with the Indians, he was named to the All-Star team four times, and won a Silver Slugger award. In 2009, Martinez was traded to the Boston Red Sox, where he played for two and a half seasons. He continued to excel at the plate, earning another All-Star selection in 2010. In 2011, Martinez signed with the Detroit Tigers, where he played for the remainder of his career. With the Tigers, he earned two more All-Star selections and helped the team reach the playoffs four times.

Throughout his career, Martinez was known for his ability to hit for average and power. He finished his career with a .295 batting average, 246 home runs, and 1,178 RBIs. Martinez was also a reliable defensive player, spending much of his time as a catcher and first baseman. After retiring from baseball in 2018, Martinez was praised for his leadership and contributions to the sport. He was inducted into the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame in 2018 and remains a beloved figure in the baseball world.
