Coleman was known for his speed and ability to steal bases, which earned him the nickname "Vincent Van Go." In his rookie season, he led the National League (NL) with 110 stolen bases, setting a new record for stolen bases by a rookie. He went on to lead the NL in stolen bases in each of his first six seasons, and he finished his career with 752 stolen bases, the sixth-most in MLB history.

Despite his impressive base-stealing abilities, Coleman was not known for his hitting. He finished his career with a .264 batting average and 28 home runs. He was, however, a two-time All-Star and won the NL Rookie of the Year award in 1985. Coleman's career came to an end in 1997, when he was released by the Mariners after playing just 11 games for the team. Despite his short tenure with the Mariners, Coleman's legacy as one of the most electrifying base runners in MLB history lives on.
