After high school, McCarty went on to play college basketball at the University of Kentucky. As a member of the Wildcats, he became a key player and helped lead the team to the NCAA championship game in 1996. In that game, he scored 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, cementing his place in UK basketball history.

McCarty was drafted into the NBA in 1996 by the New York Knicks, where he spent three seasons before being traded to the Boston Celtics. He spent the majority of his career with the Celtics, playing from 1997 to 2005. During his tenure with the Celtics, he became known for his excellent shooting and work ethic. In 2003, he was named the team's captain. McCarty ultimately finished his NBA career with stints in Phoenix and the Los Angeles Clippers before retiring in 2006.
