Whitey Ford was born in 1928 in New York City and grew up playing sandlot baseball in Astoria. In 1947, he was signed by the New York Yankees and began his career in the minors before being called up to the majors in 1950. Ford quickly established himself as one of the best pitchers in the American League, winning the World Series in 1950, 1953, and 1956.
