Willard Marshall Autographs
Willard Brown Marshall was an American baseball player born on September 17, 1921, in Richmond, Virginia. He played professionally as a left fielder and first baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB) for twelve seasons, from 1940 to 1955. After playing in the Negro League for eight seasons, he finally got noticed by a major league team in 1947, when he was signed by the New York Giants.
Marshall’s greatest years were with the Boston Braves from 1948 to 1950, where he helped the team win N.L. pennants in 1948 and 1950. He was known for his power hitting, recording the highest home run totals in each of these years. In his time with the Giants, he also played alongside many other greats, including Willie Mays, Monte Irvin, and Hank Thompson. In 1955, he made the decision to retire, ending his career with 275 home runs, 1,376 hits, and a .274 batting average in 1,645 games, all while being a strong player on the field.
Marshall’s success in the game of baseball was long-lasting, as he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and the Richmond Baseball Hall of Fame. He also became the first black member of the Richmond City Council during the 1970s, and coached baseball and basketball for St. Paul’s College in Virginia, leaving a lasting legacy in sports and social justice. Through his career, he showed that race or color did not determine one's ability to play the game, and he paved the way for future baseball players of all backgrounds.
