Willie Upshaw Autographs
Willie Upshaw is a former professional baseball first baseman, who played for twelve seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Toronto Blue Jays (1978–1987), Cleveland Indians (1988) and Baltimore Orioles (1989–1991). Born in Blanco, Texas on September 22, 1957, he was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 1st round (2nd pick) of the 1978 Draft, and quickly established himself as a premier player with the club. He batted left-handed and threw right-handed, with a sweet swing and a powerful arm that made him one of the best first basemen of his era.
Upshaw first came to prominence with the Blue Jays in 1980, when he hit .302 with eight home runs and 64 runs batted in (RBIs) in 123 games. He followed that up with an even better season in 1983, when he hit .306 with 27 homers and 104 RBIs in 150 games, and earned his first of two All-Star Game selections. In his prime, he was a dangerous power hitter and a steady fielder, with a career fielding percentage of .996. He helped lead the Blue Jays to their first division title and playoff berth in 1985 and retired in 1991 with 123 home runs and 508 RBIs in his MLB career.
After retiring as a player, Upshaw became a coach and manager in various minor league organizations, as well as a hitting coach for the Toronto Blue Jays. He was inducted into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008, and is still remembered as one of the most popular and respected players in Blue Jays history. He was a model of consistency and excellence on the baseball field, and his contributions to the sport will never be forgotten.
