Mercedes played in the Orioles' organization for three seasons, but struggled to make an impact. He was waived again in 2017, and signed with the Chicago White Sox. It was with the White Sox that Mercedes finally began to find his stride. In 2019, he hit .317 with 23 home runs in 95 games for the White Sox's Triple-A affiliate, the Charlotte Knights. That performance earned him a spot on the White Sox's 40-man roster, and he made his major-league debut in 2020. Mercedes had a stellar rookie season, hitting .276 with 5 home runs and 16 RBI in just 36 games. He quickly became a fan favorite in Chicago, and earned the nickname "Yermínator" for his strong hitting and enthusiastic celebrations on the field.

Mercedes was off to an incredible start to the 2021 season, hitting .415 with 5 home runs in his first 22 games. However, his season took a difficult turn in May, when he famously defied his manager's orders and swung on a 3-0 pitch in a blowout game against the Minnesota Twins. The ensuing controversy led to Mercedes being sent down to the minors and ultimately taking a leave of absence from the White Sox. Mercedes' future in the majors is uncertain, but his talent at the plate is undeniable, and he remains a player to watch in the coming years. Read even more about Yermin Mercedes at Wikipedia
