Bill Sharman was a professional basketball player and coach who was born on May 25, 1926 in Abilene, Texas. Sharman began his basketball career at Porterville High School in California where he excelled as a player. He then went on to play college basketball at the University of Southern California where he was a two-time All-Conference player. After college, Sharman was drafted by the Washington Capitols in the 1950 NBA draft and played for the team for one season before being traded to the Boston Celtics. More about Bill Sharman

Sharman played for the Celtics from 1951-1961, during which he became one of the most prolific scorers in the league with a career scoring average of 17.8 points per game. He was known for his ability to shoot from long range and was a four-time All-Star. Sharman was also a member of four NBA championship teams with the Celtics, and upon retiring from playing, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1976.

After his playing career, Sharman went on to become a successful coach in the NBA, coaching the Los Angeles Lakers from 1971 to 1976 and leading them to the NBA championship in 1972. He also coached the Utah Stars in the ABA and later returned to the Lakers as an executive. Sharman's contributions to basketball did not stop at the professional level, as he was integral in the development of the 24-second shot clock and is credited with developing the "shootaround" practice for teams.
