Dawkins' professional career began when he entered the NBA draft in 1975 and was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the fifth overall pick. He became a fan favorite during his time with the 76ers, where he played from 1975 to 1982. His unique personality and love for the game made him a popular player, but it was his thunderous dunks that really caught people's attention. Dawkins named his dunks unique names such as the "Go-Rilla" and "Chocolate Thunder," which became household names.

Dawkins' career highlights include two NBA Finals appearances and being named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1983. He played 14 seasons in the NBA, with his last season being in 1989 as a member of the Detroit Pistons. After retirement, Dawkins became a coach and also worked as a public speaker. He passed away on August 27, 2015, at the age of 58.
