Joe Dumars is a retired American professional basketball player and executive, born on May 24, 1963, in Louisiana. He played for 14 seasons with the Detroit Pistons, from 1985 to 1999, and was a key member of their back-to-back NBA championship teams in 1989 and 1990. Known primarily for his defensive skills, Dumars was one of the most efficient shooting guards in the league and was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team four times and the Second Team twice. After retiring as a player, Dumars joined the Pistons front office as vice president of player personnel in 2000. He was promoted to president of basketball operations in 2005 and played a significant role in assembling the Pistons' 2004 NBA title-winning team. Dumars' tenure as Pistons executive was not without controversy, however, as the team began to decline in the mid-2000s, and he stepped down in 2014 after 14 years with the organization. Despite some criticism of his later years in the front office, Dumars' legacy as a player remains secure.
