Carter's boxing career was put on hold in 1966 when he was wrongfully convicted for the murder of three people in a bar in Paterson, New Jersey. Despite a lack of physical evidence linking him to the crime, Carter was convicted based on the testimony of two eyewitnesses, both of whom later recanted their statements. Carter was sentenced to life in prison but maintained his innocence and fought for his release for nearly 20 years.

In 1985, Carter's conviction was overturned, and he was released from prison. He dedicated the remainder of his life to fighting for the rights of the wrongfully convicted and became an advocate for prison reform. Despite his unjust imprisonment, Carter remained a beloved figure in the boxing community and was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993. His life and career were the subject of a 1999 film titled "The Hurricane," which starred Denzel Washington as Carter.
