Martínez started his boxing career in Argentina in 1997. In his early days, he competed in the welterweight division, winning 18 of his 24 contests. In 2002, Martinez suffered a knockout loss to Antonio Margarito that put his career in jeopardy. He returned to the ring a year later and moved to the middleweight division, where he beat Alex Bunema to claim the WBC silver middleweight title. In 2010, he won the WBC middleweight championship title when he defeated Kelly Pavlik, a highly rated American fighter. He made four successful defences of his WBC middleweight title, including a memorable encounter against Julio César Chávez Jr in 2012.

Sergio Martínez retired from boxing in 2015. His illustrious career boasts 51 fights, with 51 wins and 28 knockouts to his name. He was a true ambassador of the sport, and his triumph over adversity was an inspiration to many aspiring boxers. Martínez's unassuming attitude and his ability to remain humble in victory and defeat will always be remembered in the annals of boxing history.
