Al Hamilton was born on August 20, 1946, in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada. He started his hockey career in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, where he played for three years with the Flin Flon Bombers. Hamilton's impressive performance on the ice caught the attention of the NHL scouts, and in 1966, he was drafted by the New York Rangers in the first round, sixth overall. More about Al Hamilton

Hamilton spent most of his professional career playing with the Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association (WHA). He was a crucial player in the team's defense lineup and played for six seasons from 1972 to 1978. Hamilton was the captain of the Oilers from 1975 to 1978, leading the team to two Avco Cups, the equivalent of the Stanley Cup in the WHA. Hamilton was also named the WHA's top defenseman in the 1975-76 season.
Hamilton's contribution to the sport was recognized when he was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. His number, 3, was retired by the Edmonton Oilers in honor of his immense contribution to the team's success.
