In 1973, Bert Jones joined the NFL as the second overall pick in the draft, being selected by the Baltimore Colts. He played for the Colts for six seasons, during which he established himself as one of the league's top quarterbacks. In 1976, Jones led the Colts to the AFC Championship game, but they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1976, and was also selected to four Pro Bowls.

Jones' football career was cut short by injuries, and he retired in 1982 at the age of 31. Despite his shortened career, Jones remains one of the most popular and revered players in Colts' history. In 1994, he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2006, he was inducted into the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor. Bert Jones' legacy in American football is that of a quarterback with a cannon arm and a keen understanding of the game, who could deliver the ball with accuracy and zip, even in the most pressured situations.
