He was born on June 29, 1949, in Canton, Ohio, and attended the University of Michigan, where he played as an offensive tackle. Dierdorf's professional football career started in 1971 when he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. He played for the Cardinals for 13 seasons, during which he was a six-time Pro Bowler and a three-time First-Team All-Pro. Dierdorf was one of the most dominant offensive linemen of his era, and he helped the Cardinals reach the NFC Championship game in 1974 and 1975. He retired after the 1983 season and was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996.

After retiring from playing, Dierdorf became a television sportscaster for CBS and later worked for ABC and ESPN. He became one of the most respected and recognizable football commentators, calling games for Monday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, and multiple Super Bowls. Dierdorf remained a fixture in the broadcasting industry until his retirement in 2014, and he has since been honored for his contributions, including induction into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 2015.
