During his time with the Buccaneers, Williams faced significant challenges, as he had to overcome racism and prejudice to become the team's starting quarterback. He led the team to their first playoff appearance in 1981 and the following year set a Super Bowl record by throwing for four touchdowns in a single quarter. Williams was also named the game's MVP, becoming the first African-American quarterback to win the award. In 1986, Williams transferred to the Washington Redskins, where he played until 1989. During his time in Washington, he played a critical role in leading the team to two Super Bowls, winning the game in 1988.

Williams' contributions to American football didn't stop when he retired from playing. He continued to stay involved in the game and became a coach and a scout for various teams over the years. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001 and was later honored by the Washington Redskins in 2015 with a Super Bowl ring. In addition to his work in football, Williams is also a philanthropist and has worked to promote African-American business opportunities. He is an inspirational figure who has paved the way for future generations of African-American quarterbacks and continues to inspire individuals through his work both on and off the field.
