Born on March 23, 1987, in Birmingham, Alabama, Bennett started playing football during his high school years at Birmingham's West End High School, where he played alongside future NFL star Wallace Gilberry. Following his outstanding high school performance, Earl Bennett received a scholarship to play for the Vanderbilt Commodores, where he continued to excel. He set the record for most career receptions in SEC history, with a total of 236. Bennett's performance warranted recognition, earning him first-team All-SEC honors as a junior in 2007 and second-team All-SEC honors as a senior in 2008. He was also a finalist for the Conerly Trophy, which is given to the best college football player in the State of Mississippi, during his senior year.

Earl Bennett was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2008 NFL Draft, in the third round, at 70th overall. He played for the team from 2008 to 2012, making a significant impact in their offense throughout his time in the league. Bennett's best season was in 2009 when he made 54 receptions for 717 yards and two touchdowns. After being released by the Bears in 2013, Bennett was signed by the Cleveland Browns but never took the field due to a spiral bone fracture in his hand, leading to his retirement in 2014.
