Ed Bailey Autograph

Ed Bailey was a former professional baseball player who was born on April 15, 1931, in Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. He played as a catcher and spent most of his career with the San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Braves, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bailey showed promise in high school and was scouted by major league teams, notably the New York Yankees, before signing with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1948. More about Ed Bailey

Bailey's debut with the Phillies was in 1953, but he only played six games for the team before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds. That was where he made his mark, playing 10 seasons and earning three All-Star selections while batting .287 with 172 home runs and 574 runs batted in. Bailey was also a capable catcher who had a rifle arm and was known for his ability to call excellent games behind the plate. In 1963, he moved to the San Francisco Giants and helped them reach the World Series in back-to-back years.

Bailey played his final season with the Milwaukee Braves in 1966 before announcing his retirement from the game. Throughout his 16-year career, he earned a reputation as one of the best catchers in the league and had a career batting average of .256 while hitting 155 home runs and driving in 581 runs.
