Ed Farmer, born on October 18, 1949, was an American former professional baseball player who played in the Major Leagues as a relief pitcher for 11 seasons from 1971 through 1983. He was born in Evergreen Park, Illinois, and attended St. Rita of Cascia High School on Chicago’s South Side, where he played baseball and basketball. In 1968, Farmer signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and spent three seasons in their minor league system before making his Major League debut on April 7, 1971. He spent the next few seasons bouncing between the Dodgers, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Baltimore Orioles before being traded to the Chicago White Sox in 1979. It was with the White Sox that Farmer found his greatest success, becoming their closer and saving 30 games in 1980 and 22 in 1981.
After retiring from baseball in 1986, Farmer became a broadcaster and was the radio announcer for the White Sox for 28 seasons, until his passing on April 1, 2020. He was known for his deep voice and colorful commentary, and was beloved by White Sox fans for his passion for the game and his willingness to call it like he saw it.
