He became known as one of the toughest and most hardworking players in the National Football League (NFL) history. Gregg started his professional football career with the Green Bay Packers in 1956. He played with the team for 14 seasons, contributing to five NFL championships in 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966, and 1967, as well as two Super Bowl wins in 1967 and 1968. He was selected to play in nine Pro Bowls and was named to the All-Pro First Team seven times. Gregg was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977 because of his outstanding achievements as a right tackle.

After his playing career, Gregg became a successful coach in the NFL, leading the Cleveland Browns, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Green Bay Packers. As a head coach, he took the Bengals to their first Super Bowl appearance in 1981. Gregg coached the Packers for four years, from 1984 to 1987, leading the team to the playoffs in his final season. He worked as a scout for the Packers until his passing on April 12, 2019, at the age of 85.
