After a standout college football career, Rogers was selected as the number one overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. In his rookie year, he rushed for 1,674 yards, which remains the most ever by a first-year player in NFL history, and earned the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. The next two seasons saw Rogers rush for over 1,100 yards each, and he solidified himself as one of the premier running backs in the NFL. However, his success with the Saints was short-lived, and he spent the rest of his career with the Washington Redskins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he struggled with injuries and only played sparingly.

Despite his brief NFL career, Rogers left a lasting impact on professional football, especially with his remarkable college achievements. In 1997, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, recognizing his incredible contributions to college football. Today, George Rogers remains an iconic figure in the history of American football, and his incredible athleticism and career serve as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes.
