After his stellar high school career, Miller enrolled at the University of Virginia where he continued to excel on the football field. In his college career, Miller recorded 144 receptions for 1,703 yards and 20 touchdowns, earning first-team All-ACC honors twice. In 2005, he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the NFL Draft, 30th overall. Miller would go on to spend his entire NFL career with the Steelers, earning two Pro Bowl selections and helping the team win two Super Bowl championships in 2005 and 2008.

During his ten-year career with the Steelers, Miller established himself as one of the most dependable tight ends in the league. He recorded 592 receptions for 6,569 yards and 45 touchdowns, becoming Pittsburgh's all-time leader in receptions and yards by a tight end. Miller was known for his solid blocking skills and his ability to catch the ball in traffic. His contributions on and off the field earned him immense respect from his teammates, coaches, and fans, and he retired from the NFL in 2016 as one of the most beloved players in Steelers history.
