He was born on March 8, 1976, in Seoul, South Korea, to parents who were both African Americans, making him biracial. During his collegiate football career at the University of Georgia, Ward was an active player for three seasons from 1994 to 1997. He was named All-SEC by the coaches for his spectacular performance during his senior season. Ward was later drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 1998 NFL Draft. He eventually spent his entire 14-year career in the NFL with the Steelers, becoming their all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown receptions. Hines Ward was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and was ranked the 8th best receiver ever to play for the Steelers.

Throughout his remarkable football journey, Ward's legacy was built on his toughness, blocking ability, and versatility. His playing style was unique, which allowed him to make an impact on the field every time he played. He was known for his signature smile and charismatic personality. He won two Super Bowls with the Steelers, and was named the MVP of Super Bowl XL. After retiring from the NFL in 2012, Ward became a studio analyst for NBC’s Sunday Night Football and was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
