After a successful college career, Woods was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 1988 NFL draft. In his rookie season, Woods had a tremendous impact on the Bengals as a running back. One of his memorable moments was the “Ickey Shuffle,” a dance he would perform when he scored a touchdown. He was instrumental in guiding the Bengals to a 12-4 record in the 1988 season and a spot in the Super Bowl, though they ultimately lost to the San Francisco 49ers. Although knee injuries somewhat derailed his career, Woods played four seasons with the Bengals and set several records, including leading the league in rushing touchdowns in 1988 and pro bowl selection that same year.

Following his stint in the NFL, Ickey Woods made a seamless transition into a coaching career. He initially worked with various high school teams in the Cincinnati area and later became the running backs coach at the University of Cincinnati. Woods also started the "Jovante Woods Foundation," named in memory of his son who died of a severe asthma attack, which raises awareness about asthma and provides help to families with children suffering from the disease. Thanks to his impact on football and off the field philanthropy, Woods remains a revered figure among Bengals fans and the broader American Football community.
