James Rodney Richard, commonly known as J.R. Richard, was born on March 7, 1950, in Vienna, Louisiana. He was a successful pitcher in his early years, and in high school, his 6-foot-8 stature caught the attention of the Houston Astros organization, which selected him in the first round of the 1969 amateur draft. In 1971, Richard made his debut in the big leagues with the Houston Astros, where he spent the majority of his career. During his career, Richard had a reputation as one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball, known for his incredible fastball that clocked in at over 100 miles per hour. More about J.R. Richard
