After committing to LSU, Addai began his college football career in 2001, playing as a backup running back for the Tigers. He eventually became a starter in his junior and senior years, and his performance earned him recognition as an All-American and an All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) player. In his senior season, he helped the Tigers win the BCS National Championship in 2003. Addai was later selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 2006 NFL draft.

In his professional career, Addai played for the Colts from 2006 to 2011 and the New England Patriots in 2012. He was known for his versatility as a running back and his ability to catch passes out of the backfield. In 2007, he recorded over 1,000 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards, earning a Pro Bowl selection that year. Throughout his career, Addai remained a consistent contributor to his teams, scoring a total of 48 touchdowns and amassing over 5,800 yards from scrimmage.
