In 2004, he was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and in his first season, he led them to a Super Bowl victory. His success with the Steelers earned him his first head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals in 2007, where he led them to their first Super Bowl appearance in over 60 years. After three seasons with the Cardinals, Whisenhunt was hired as the head coach for the Tennessee Titans in 2013 but was fired after two seasons due to poor performance.
