In 1986, Rypien was drafted by the Washington Redskins as the 146th overall pick. He began his career as a backup quarterback before becoming the starting quarterback in 1988. Rypien led the Redskins to win the Super Bowl in 1991, earning him the honor of being named the game's Most Valuable Player (MVP). He continued to play exceptionally well, leading the Redskins to become one of the NFL's most dominant teams during the early 1990s.

Rypien continued to play for several other teams, including the Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Rams, and Indianapolis Colts, before retiring from the NFL in 2002. Over the course of his career, he threw for over 18,000 yards, achieved a total of 115 touchdowns, and recorded a quarterback rating of 78.9. Rypien's impressive statistics and iconic status in the Redskins' history have earned him a place in the team's Ring of Fame, which he joined in 2015.
