After an outstanding high school career, Jones-Drew attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he played for the Bruins. He quickly gained a reputation as an explosive and versatile player, able to score touchdowns both as a running back and a kick returner. In 2006, he declared for the NFL draft and was chosen in the second round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. It was the start of an impressive professional career that spanned nine seasons and saw Jones-Drew become an All-Pro, a three-time Pro Bowler, and a feared adversary on the field.

Throughout his career, Jones-Drew established himself as a fan favorite because of his gritty play, his ability to break tackles, and his knack for scoring touchdowns in crucial moments. He became the Jaguars' all-time leader in rushing touchdowns and yards, and also ranked high in the NFL record books for various achievements, including the most touchdowns of less than ten yards in a single season.
