For the next decade, he remained a stalwart of the Cowboys' defense, and his toughness and tenacity made him a fan favorite. He was known for his ferocious hits and tackling abilities, and his relentless pursuit of opposing quarterbacks. He was a nine-time Pro Bowler, a six-time All-Pro selection, and was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 1978.

After retiring from football, White pursued a career in commercial real estate. He also remained involved in football as a co-host of the Cowboys' pre- and post-game shows on the team's flagship radio station. In addition to his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, White was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994. Today he is remembered as one of the greatest defensive players in the history of the NFL.
