Perkins is best known for his achievements in the world of American football, where he excelled both as a player and as a coach. During his college career, Perkins played for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team as a wide receiver from 1964 until 1966. He was part of the team that won two national championships and was named an All-American in his senior year. He then moved on to play in the NFL for the Baltimore Colts from 1967 to 1971 and for the San Diego Chargers from 1972 until 1973. He even played in Super Bowl III, where the Colts lost to the New York Jets.

After retiring from playing football, Perkins began coaching. He served as an assistant coach for several teams, including the New England Patriots, the San Diego Chargers, and the New York Giants. In 1979, he became the head coach for the Giants, where he coached for four seasons. He then moved on to coach the University of Alabama football team in 1983, where he won the SEC Championship. Perkins later returned to the NFL to coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, before returning to college football to coach at Arkansas State University and Jones County Junior College, where he retired in 2018.
