Matte started his professional career with the Baltimore Colts in 1961 as a running back. He made an immediate impact in his rookie year, rushing for 622 yards and four touchdowns. However, it was in 1965 that Matte's versatility was put to use when the Colts suffered numerous injuries to their quarterbacks. Matte was called upon to play as a starting quarterback for the team, and he delivered outstanding performances. Matte led the Colts to a 10-3-1 record, rushing for 578 yards and passing for 1,386 yards and nine touchdowns during the season.

In 1966, Matte continued his impressive performances, leading the Colts to their first-ever Super Bowl victory. The team defeated the Dallas Cowboys in a historic game that was played at the Orange Bowl Stadium in Miami. Matte played as a starting running back in the game and was instrumental in helping the Colts secure the win. He went on to play for the Colts for 12 seasons, retiring in 1972 after being traded to the New York Giants. Today, Tom Matte is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the Baltimore Colts franchise. Read even more about Tom Matte at Wikipedia
