Bo Porter is a former Major League Baseball player and coach who was born on July 5, 1972, in Newark, New Jersey. Porter took an interest in baseball at a young age and played at Weequahic High School, where he was a standout center fielder. Porter was initially signed by the Chicago Cubs in the 40th round of the 1993 MLB June Amateur Draft, but it was the Oakland Athletics who eventually gave the outfielder his professional shot in 1999. He made his debut for the A's that same year and played in a total of 89 games over two seasons with the franchise. In 2001, he was traded to the Texas Rangers, where he batted .248 with three home runs and 14 RBIs in 57 games. Porter's playing career came to a close after he played six games for the Atlanta Braves in 2002, finishing with a .214 career batting average, four home runs, and 24 RBIs.
Although Porter's playing career was relatively short-lived, he made a name for himself in baseball as a coach and manager. In 2006, he began his coaching career with the Marlins organization, working as a minor league roving instructor before eventually joining the big-league coaching staff in 2010. In 2013, Porter was hired as the manager of the Houston Astros, where he earned a reputation as an excellent teacher and strategic thinker.
