His father, Mikhail, was a professional soccer player, and his mother, Tatyana, was a two-time Olympic gold medalist in basketball. Ovechkin began his professional career with Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Superleague in 2001, scoring 13 goals and 11 assists in 40 games during his debut season. In 2004, he was drafted first overall by the Washington Capitals, and he immediately made an impact in the NHL. In his rookie season, he scored 52 goals and 54 assists, becoming the first rookie since Teemu Selanne to score 50 goals in a season. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy for best rookie and has since won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player in the NHL three times, as well as the Maurice Richard Trophy for most goals scored in a season nine times.

Throughout his career, Ovechkin has been known for his incredible scoring ability and physical play on the ice. He has won a Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018 and continues to be a dominant force in the NHL. In addition to his success in the NHL, Ovechkin has also represented Russia in international competitions, including the Olympics, where he won a gold medal in 2018.
