Holtby began his NHL career in the 2010-2011 season with the Capitals, and quickly established himself as a top goaltender. In the 2015-2016 season, he played a key role in leading his team to the President's Trophy, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record. The Caps went on to advance to the second round of the playoffs, but ultimately fell short of their ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup. However, Holtby's standout performance earned him the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goaltender.

Throughout his career, Holtby became known for his lightning-fast reflexes and outstanding ability to make improbable saves. He also gained a reputation as a fierce competitor with a calm and collected demeanor, earning him the nickname "The Holtbeast." Despite retiring from professional hockey in 2021, Holtby leaves behind an impressive legacy, having played in over 500 NHL games and winning the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018.
