Hawerchuk was drafted first overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He quickly became the team's star player, leading them to the playoffs six times and winning the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie in 1982. Hawerchuk was named to the NHL All-Star team five times and won the Lester B. Pearson Award in 1982.
