He played a significant role in the development of American hockey, as he was one of the famous players on the USA team in the 1972 Summit Series. Esposito began his professional hockey career in 1964 when he signed a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. After two seasons, he was traded to the Boston Bruins, where he spent nine seasons and won two Stanley Cup championships in 1970 and 1972. During his time in Boston, he set a number of NHL records, including most goals (76) and points (152) in a single season.

He then played for the New York Rangers for seven seasons before retiring in 1981. In total, Esposito appeared in 1,282 NHL games and tallied 1,590 points, which ranks eighth in league history. After his playing career, he worked as a commentator for CBS, NBC, and the CBC, among other networks.
