Anderson quickly proved himself to be a skilled and fearless pilot, distinguishing himself in missions over France, Germany, and other parts of Europe. He earned the nickname "Old Crow" after the brand of whiskey that he enjoyed drinking, and painted it on the side of his plane for good luck. Anderson flew a total of 116 combat missions, shooting down 16 German planes and damaging another 9. He was one of the top scoring American pilots of the war, and was awarded numerous medals and honors for his bravery and skill, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 25 Oak Leaf Clusters.

After the war, Anderson continued to serve in the US Air Force, rising to the rank of colonel and holding a variety of command positions. He remained active in aviation throughout his life, serving as a test pilot for McDonnell Douglas and as a member of the board of directors for the Experimental Aircraft Association. Anderson was also a sought-after speaker and historian, sharing his perspectives on the war and his experiences as a fighter pilot with audiences around the world. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007 in recognition of his contributions to American aviation and military history. Read even more about Bud Anderson at Wikipedia
