Rice played college basketball at the University of Michigan from 1985 to 1989 where he finished as the all-time leading scorer in the program's history with 2,442 points. During his NBA career, Rice was a prolific scorer and one of the deadliest shooters in the league's history. He had a smooth shooting stroke that enabled him to hit shots from beyond the arc with ease. In the 1994-95 season, Rice had one of the best years of his career, averaging 22.3 points per game and shooting 47.0% from 3-point range. In the 1996 NBA All-Star Game, Rice set an event record by scoring 20 points in a single quarter and was named the game's MVP.

In addition to his time with the Heat, Rice also played for the Charlotte Hornets, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, and the Los Angeles Clippers. He retired from the NBA in 2004 with 18,336 points, which ranks him 35th on the all-time scoring list. Rice was a three-time All-Star, won an NBA championship with the Lakers in 2000, and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 for his contributions to the game of basketball.
