Roberto Clemente was born on August 18, 1934, in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was the youngest of seven siblings and started playing baseball at a young age with his brothers. He first signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954 but stayed in Puerto Rico due to language and cultural barriers. In 1955, he played for the Santurce Crabbers in the Puerto Rican Winter League, where he caught the attention of Pittsburgh Pirates scout Al Campanis. Clemente quickly became a star player for the Pirates, known for his powerful throwing arm and hitting ability. He won the National League batting title four times, was a 15-time All-Star, won 12 Gold Gloves, and helped lead the Pirates to two World Series championships in 1960 and 1971. Clemente was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1971 World Series, where he hit .414 with two home runs and four RBIs.

Off the field, Clemente was known for his humanitarian efforts. He used his baseball career to raise money and awareness for those in need, particularly in Latin American countries. Tragically, on December 31, 1972, Clemente died in a plane crash while en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. In 1973, he was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, making him the first Latin American player to receive the honor.
