Roberto Clemente was born on August 18, 1934, in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was the youngest of seven siblings and started playing baseball at a young age with his brothers. He first signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954 but stayed in Puerto Rico due to language and cultural barriers. In 1955, he played for the Santurce Crabbers in the Puerto Rican Winter League, where he caught the attention of Pittsburgh Pirates scout Al Campanis.
