In 1854, Lincoln re-entered politics and was instrumental in forming the Republican Party. He won the Republican nomination for the US Senate in 1858 and was in a series of debates with Democratic Senator Stephen Douglas, where he expressed his strong opposition to the expansion of slavery. Although he lost the Senate election, his debates with Douglas brought him national recognition, and he emerged as a leading candidate for president in 1860.

In 1861, Lincoln was inaugurated as the 16th President of the United States, and he went on to lead the country through the Civil War. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and pushed for the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution that abolished slavery throughout the country. Although his presidency was short-lived, Abraham Lincoln's political career played a crucial role in shaping the United States for years to come. Read even more about Abraham Lincoln at Wikipedia
