Chandler's involvement in the world of baseball began in 1942 when he was appointed president of the American Association, a minor league. He quickly gained a reputation as a savvy businessman and earned the trust of the major league owners. In 1945, Chandler was elected commissioner of MLB, succeeding Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who had held the position since 1920. As commissioner, Chandler made several significant changes to the game, including integrating the sport and expanding the league to the west coast.

Chandler is also remembered for his role in breaking the color barrier in baseball. In 1947, he gave Dodgers' general manager Branch Rickey permission to sign Jackie Robinson, making Robinson the first African American player in MLB history. Chandler faced criticism and even death threats for his decision, but he stood by his choice and helped pave the way for more African American players to enter the sport. Chandler's contributions to baseball are significant and continue to be recognized today as he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982. Read even more about Happy Chandler at Wikipedia
