John Glenn Autograph

John Glenn Jr. was born on July 18, 1921, and grew up in New Concord, Ohio. After finishing his education, he joined the Navy and became a fighter pilot during World War II. In 1957, he was selected to be one of the first group of astronauts in the newly created NASA space program. He became the first American to orbit the Earth on February 20, 1962, aboard the spacecraft Friendship 7. After his space flight, he retired from the astronaut program and entered politics. In 1974, John Glenn was elected as a U.S. senator for Ohio, where he served for 24 years. In 1998, at the age of 77, he returned to space aboard the space shuttle Discovery, becoming the oldest person to fly in space.
