Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States and a renowned military commander. His political career began after his victory in the Civil War when he was appointed the commanding general of the Union Army. After the war, he was a central figure in the Reconstruction period, working to rebuild the nation and establish civil rights for African Americans.
