Wood played college basketball for the University of North Carolina, where he proved himself to be one of the best players in the team's history. During his time in the college, he helped lead the Tar Heels to the 1979 NCAA championship game, where they lost to Michigan State. Despite the loss, Wood's outstanding performances throughout the tournament earned him the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award. His incredible shooting and scoring abilities earned him All-ACC and All-American honors, and he finished his college career with 1,797 points.

After his college years, Al Wood went on to have a successful career in the NBA, where he played for the Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, and San Antonio Spurs. Over the course of his nine-year career, Wood averaged an impressive 15 points per game and is known for having one of the sweetest and smoothest jump shots in league history.
