Born on June 29, 1967, in South Boston, Virginia, Burton developed a passion for racing at an early age. He began his professional racing career in 1988, driving in the NASCAR Cup Series, but it wasn't until 1990 that he went full-time. In addition to his accomplishments on the track, Burton was also known for his willingness to speak out on a variety of issues impacting NASCAR. Following the death of Dale Earnhardt in 2001, Burton was among the drivers who collaborated with NASCAR to institute safer racing conditions. He was a passionate advocate for driver safety, and his efforts helped make the sport much safer for participants. After retiring from full-time driving in 2013, Burton joined NBC Sports as a commentator for the NASCAR Cup Series.
